Multiscale Modeling of Structurally-Graded Materials Using Discrete Dislocation Plasticity Models and Continuum Crystal Plasticity Models

چکیده
A multiscale modeling methodology that combines the predictive capability of discrete dislocation plasticity and the computational efficiency of continuum crystal plasticity is developed. Single crystal configurations of different grain sizes modeled with periodic boundary conditions are analyzed using discrete dislocation plasticity (DD) to obtain grain size-dependent stress-strain predictions. These relationships are mapped into crystal plasticity parameters to develop a multiscale DD/CP model for continuum level simulations. A polycrystal model of a structurally-graded microstructure is developed, analyzed and used as a benchmark for comparison between the multiscale DD/CP model and the DD predictions. The multiscale DD/CP model follows the DD predictions closely up to an initial peak stress and then follows a strain hardening path that is parallel but somewhat offset from the DD predictions. The difference is believed to be from a combination of the strain rate in the DD simulation and the inability of the DD/CP model to represent non-monotonic material response.

Plastic Flow in a Composite: A Comparison of Nonlocal Continuum and Discrete Dislocation Predictions
A two-dimensional model composite with elastic reinforcements in a crystalline matrix subject to macroscopic shear is considered using both discrete dislocation plasticity and a nonlocal continuum crystal plasticity theory. Only single slip is permitted in the matrix material. The discrete dislocation results are used as numerical experiments and we explore the extent to which the nonlocal crys...

Several researchers have proved that the constitutive models of concrete based on combination of continuum damage and plasticity theories are able to reproduce the major aspects of concrete behavior. A problem of such damage-plasticity models is associated with the material constants which are needed to be determined before using the model. These constants are in fact the connectors of constitu...

This thesis consists of two parts. The first part explores a 2-d edge dislocation model to demonstrate characteristics of Field Dislocation Mechanics (FDM) in modeling single and collective behavior of individual dislocations. The second work explores the possibility of modelling adiabatic shear bands propagation within the timespace averaged framework of Mesoscopic Field Dislocation Mechanics ...
متن کاملNon-local Continuum Thermodynamic Extensions of Crystal Plasticity to Include the Effects of Geometrically-necessary Dislocations on the Material Behaviour
The purpose of this work is the formulation of constitutive models for the inelastic material behaviour of single crystals and polycrystals in which geometrically-necessary dislocations (GNDs) may develop and influence this behaviour. To this end, we focus on the dependence of the development of such dislocations on the inhomogeneity of the inelastic deformation in the material. More precisely,...
متن کاملBoundary Layers in Constrained Plastic Flow: Comparison of Nonlocal and Discrete Dislocation Plasticity
Simple shear of a constrained strip is analyzed using both discrete dislocation plasticity and strain gradient crystal plasticity theory. Both single slip and symmetric double slip are considered. The loading is such that for a local continuum description of plastic flow the deformation state is one of homogeneous shear. In the discrete dislocation formulation the dislocations are all of edge c...
